Swiss passport, swiss design, swiss typeface(s).

Commissioned by the Federal Office of Police (fedpol) and released in Fall 2022, the new design of the Swiss passport is the result of a close collaboration between Geneva-based studio RETINAA and a group of experts led by fedpol, as well as with security printing specialists Thales and Orell Füssli. Between 2017 and 2019, Swiss Typefaces took part in the creative process by designing the font.

Retinaa’s final design combines both aesthetic elegance and cutting-edge security features. With its sleek and modern appearance, the passport showcases a harmonious blend of Swiss heritage and contemporary design elements. Paying tribute to Switzerland’s natural panorama and landmarks, the addition of discreet yet recognizable design elements shapes a journey across all 26 cantons. Beyond its visual appeal, the new Swiss passport incorporates innovative technologies that guarantee the authenticity of the document and ensure the protection of its holder’s personal data.

“The Swiss passport is more than a formal administrative document. It is the expression of Helvetic identity and a brand ambassador for Switzerland abroad. It is a celebration of Swissness and a showcase of technological know-how.”  – Retinaa (read more about Retinaa's creative process here)

We are very proud to have been involved in this piece of Swiss design history.
